Frequent urination at night, nocturia
Frequent urination at night known as nocturia can lead to other more serious disorders. Putting the cause of nocturia aside for the moment it is important to look at what happens to people that do not stop their nocturia. For those with no  problems getting out of bed to go to the toilet at night, when they begin going more and more often, they start cutting down on restful deep sleep. This becomes the source of a sleeping disorder, chronic insomnia. They start to acquire the day to day functional impairments that manifest with insomnia such as fatigue and irritability.

Frequent urination at night when mobility is impaired, especially with older people, can lead to falling down on their many night time trips to the bathroom. If mobility is difficult bedpans and handheld urinals become the method of choice. With the convenience of no longer getting out of bed during the night improving their sleeping patterns, people think that they have found the solution to their problem. Unfortunately the hidden medical cause of the urinary frequency is not assessed and what ever the unknown cause is will now become untreated and probably worsen. If the unknown problem is a cancerous growth, kidney stone, kidney infection, neurological disorder or sexually transmitted disease it becomes harder to address the damage and progress that the disease has advanced into.

Frequent urination at night also leads to incontinence issues when cognitive and manual dexterity become problematic. Bedding, pads, pampers, skin irritation and pressure sores are all new issues to start focusing on. Each item will add another expense and daily tasks to clean and replace sheets, blankets clothing, creams, medicines, and dressing changes.
